What’s your COVID-19 Story? Archiving and sharing the pandemic experience

Abstract
University libraries and archives across the country developed projects to preserve the memories of their students, staff, and faculty as the pandemic progressed. UWF built on the model developed by St. Edward's University to develop an online form to gather responses and a WordPress site to share responses with the university community. The librarians at UWF embarked on this project to capture the voices of those who might not otherwise be preserved in official accounts, which tend to focus on news media and official reports. This model is supported by historian Billy G. Smith's comments that when speaking about what he wished that he had access to the journals and letters of Americans who lived through it the 1792 Yellow Fever epidemic while writing Ship of Death: A Voyage That Changed the Atlantic World. This on-going project is our attempt to provide that type of resource for people who will research the public response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This presentation will include select responses from participants, but focuses on the challenges inherent in developing the project and lessons learned in attempting to conduct outreach to the university community after most students and staff have left the campus. It will also address plans to continue the project as campuses reopen during the Fall 2020 semester.
