Introduction: Capstone Adaptive Learning & Therapy Centers, Inc, Burgess Group Home provides housing and supportive care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The identified need was to provide increased options for outdoor physical and sensory activities for the residents. Study findings show there are health benefits from the use of sensory activities and being outdoors. Aims: The purpose of this project was to provide outdoor sensory related activities for the residents to increase physical activity and connection with nature. The aim was to develop and implement an outdoor sensory event on July 18, 2026, promoting resident inclusiveness and social engagement. Methods: The group planned a 60 minute sensory-related outdoor event titled “Red, White & You,” including music and holiday foods. The group sought donations from friends and family for the event using an Amazon wishlist. Deliverables included two infographics describing: (1) wheelchair accessible physical activities and (2) benefits of time outdoors for adults with IDD. Results: All six residents spent at least sixty minutes outside and participated in at least two different activities with assistance. Activities included: sensory water table and tie-dying shirts and handkerchiefs. All donated supplies were left at the group home for future use, including a folding table. All residents expressed satisfaction with the event. Conclusion: Physical and outdoor activities often present accessibility challenges for adults with IDD who are wheelchair bound. This project increased resident exposure to the outdoors, promoted physical activity, and provided new sensory activities that can continue to be implemented in the future.
