Food Insecurity Hypertension Prevention Underinsured Community Health Nursing Nursing Education
Introduction: Community Health Northwest Florida (CHNF) is a nonprofit healthcare organization dedicated to providing quality, affordable healthcare services to uninsured and low-income individuals in Florida. The identified problem is increased risk of hypertension due to poor nutritional health. Evidence substantiates a correlation between food insecurity and higher rates of hypertension and chronic disease. Aims: The purpose of this project was to emphasize the importance of healthy eating practices and community food resources. The learning objectives were: (1) Discuss healthy recipes that utilize affordable or food bank resources; (2) Use one healthy recipe to create a meal; and (3) List two community resources to obtain healthy foods. Methods: The group developed educational deliverables using the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and DASH diet recommendations. Canva and MSWord were utilized to create the following deliverables: Healthy recipe cards; and Community resource guide. Accessibility and health literacy were considered in the design of all materials. Results: Education was provided to 15 patients during CHNF Food as Medicine monthly pick up of food boxes. CHNF plans to incorporate the developed educational materials for all new patients. Patient and CHNF staff feedback was positive. Conclusion: Hypertension remains a significant population health issue among uninsured and low-income individuals, and limited access to healthy foods contributes to poor health outcomes. By providing affordable, heart-healthy recipes and community resource information through the Food is Medicine program, the group encouraged healthier food choices to support blood pressure management and overall wellness.
