Introduction: Capstone Adaptive Learning & Therapy Centers, Inc. Nobles group home prioritizes the advancement of independent function for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. The identified issue was that many of the residents struggle with low self-esteem. Study findings show that improving motor function can lead to an increase in self esteem.
Aims: The purpose of the project was to educate and provide measures to promote resident self-esteem at the Nobles group home. The aim was to develop and implement a dance party with the residents to promote self-expression by July 18, 2026.
Methods: The group planned an event titled “Dancing in Paradise.” Deliverables included: donation flyer; presentation; and infographic about self-esteem and positive affirmations. An Amazon wish list was created to seek donations. The group created eight goodie bags for each of the residents for the event that included the positive affirmation infographic. Tropical Smoothie donated lunch and smoothies.
Results: During the semester, the group prepared interactive activities each week that encouraged self-expression while preparing for the event. Eight residents took turns participating in the planned activities and enthusiastically cheered for each other during the games. The residents smiled, laughed, and stated they had fun. Staff feedback was positive feedback. All donated items were left at the group home for future use.
Conclusion: As motor competence increases in adults with intellectual and developmental disability, self-esteem is likely to increase. This project provided an opportunity for the residents to express themselves, work on their motor skills, and practice self confidence.
