Abstract

Sensory garden Capstone Emotional regulation Community Health Nursing Nursing Education
Introduction: Capstone Adaptive Learning & Therapy Centers, Inc., Transition Employment Center (CALTC-TEC) is a community agency that promotes the social, emotional, and developmental well being of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The identified need was increased opportunities for social interaction, skill building, and self expression. Study findings support the use of creative and horticultural activities to improve emotional regulation and increase independence Aims: The purpose of this project is to create a sensory garden for students at CALTECH-TEC to increase enrichment activities, social interaction, and connection with nature. After this educational activity participants will be able to: (1) Identify two sensory functions; (2) Discuss how connecting with nature can improve health; and (3) Describe how gardening can promote teamwork and social inclusion. Methods: The group then selected inexpensive, low-maintenance plants that provide sensory stimulation while attracting butterflies and birds. Project deliverables included: sensory garden design; sensory functions infographic; butterfly identification cards featuring native Florida butterflies; and a hands-on milk jug bird feeder craft. Health literacy and accessibility were considered with all educational materials. Results: Twenty-five participants were educated about the sensory garden, native Florida butterfly habitats, and the five senses. Twenty-two clients participated in painting bird feeders. Staff and participant feedback was positive. Conclusion: The butterfly sensory garden provided a setting that encourages sensory exploration, environmental awareness, and therapeutic engagement, meeting the demand for accessible, interactive learning experiences. This project demonstrates how partnerships between communities can help promote health and improve quality of life for people with different educational needs.
