Abstract

Large infrastructure projects, or megaprojects, often rise to a level of regional, national, and international importance, due to the critical needs that inform their design and implementation. They are also of great consequence from a symbolic perspective, and may show technical skill and ability in a spectacular manner that portends public benefits and enhanced quality of life. Megaprojects are also sometimes known for being the loci of cascading failure and avoidable loss of life; there is potential for a negative side of massive engineering feats: hubris, arrogance, and waste of public resources for negligible collective benefit.
