Maritime archaeology also has created a unique space for citizen scientists working toward educational program development, ranging from elementary school introductions in archaeology and underwater science to post-graduate studies focused on mapping, interpretation, and research design. Case studies have also focused on training objectives for veterans and local communities, along with inclusion in stewardship and management strategies aimed at at-risk resources documenting and long-term monitoring. These studies highlight the successes of citizen science in maritime archaeology and offer avenues for further development. As maritime archaeology continues to progress as a field, however, re-evaluation of goals, purposes, and opportunities is warranted.
