The term self-directed learning describes a process whereby individuals take the initiative, with or without assistance, in perceiving their learning needs, setting up learning goals, identifying human and nonhuman resources for learning, selecting and implementing appropriate learning strategies, and evaluating their learning outcomes. It refers to the degree of choice that learners have within an instructional situation. It was originally derived from adult learning and andragogy and now is a core theoretical construct as a field of study distinguished from adult education.
