Abstract

writing program administrator (WPA) Bullying Higher Education Writing or Composition Education
excerpt - We can’t tell you how often we’ve sat or stood in front of a crowd of seasoned scholars at a professional conference and heard the refrain “that’s why you don’t take a WPA job until you’re tenured.” These voices are echoed by the scholarship we read while working as graduate assistants to writing program administrators (WPAs) (Bishop and Crossley 1996; Hult 1995; Gunner 1994; Schell,1998). And they are the voices we continue to hear in our formalized spaces. For example, in the 2016 CCCC Statement of Best Practices in Faculty Hiring for Tenure-Track and Non-Tenure-Track Positions in Rhetoric and Composition/Writing Studies, the first bullet under “Best Practices for Hiring WPA Administrator states, “WPAs are hired with tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.” The formal position of the organization is clear (CCCC 2016).
