Abstract

Mobile design has become increasingly important in recent years due to the widespread use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Designing for mobile devices poses unique challenges, as these devices have small screens and touch-based interactions, and users tend to have different needs and behaviors compared to desktop users. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the principles and best practices of mobile design to create user-friendly mobile interfaces effectively and efficiently. This chapter provides a comprehensive guideline to mobile design, which is divided into seven sections with each addressing different aspects of mobile design. Specifically, it carefully discusses two important parts of mobile design: user interface (UI) and user experience (UX). It also provides readers with a thorough understanding of mobile design, including common mobile UI design patterns and insights about mobile usability. Moreover, the newly emergent mobile technologies have been examined, which could endow mobile design with new characteristics. By the end of this chapter, readers will have gained an appreciation for the unique opportunities and challenges associated with mobile design, and will be equipped with the knowledge needed for effective and efficient mobile design.
