The Earth is witnessing drastic climatic changes in recent years, causing prolonged monsoons, heavy rains, drought, and flash floods. As cultivable land is limited and resources are scarce, sustainable agriculture has become crucially imperative for the sector to mitigate these challenges and meet the global demands for food supply. It aims at modernising farming practices that are environment friendly, preserve biodiversity, improve crop yield, and focus on the reduction of chemical usage. The Internet of Things (IoT) and its applications in agriculture have shown tremendous potential in meeting the goals of sustainable agriculture. It is used for tapping into important field parameters, like soil health, parameters of the surrounding environment, plant health, and weather conditions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine learning (ML) algorithms have made significant contributions to Agricultural IoT. These algorithms either run at the Gateway as an edge device or in the Cloud, where they are used for data analysis, data filtering, decision-making, yield prediction, and disease prevention. This chapter presents brief insights into IoT and AI in sustainable agriculture. A detailed discussion on key technologies, benefits, challenges, and their future for application to the field of agriculture is provided. Recent case studies are provided to showcase the successful implementation of IoT and AI in sustainable agriculture.
