As reflected in the latest iteration of the APA Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major (Version 3.0, APA 2023), learning to engage in scientific reasoning continues to be a hallmark feature of the psychology degree. Often it is through the research methods course that students learn how to apply the scientific method to address psychological questions. The challenge is that this foundational course is one that students are often reluctant to take as they question its value, especially after college (Strohmetz et al., 2023). Instructors also find research methods particularly challenging to teach given the expectations of what this course should entail (Ciarocco et al., 2017). In this chapter, we will discuss how we reinvented our approach to this course by shifting our emphasis from 'covering content' to 'doing more science.' Through this course redesign, we not only strengthened student learning of content but also reinforced the types of skills that employers desire in graduates.
