How can extended reality technologies intersect with the engineering design process to support K-8 high-ability learners? In this chapter, we provide a brief history of extended reality technologies. Then, we explore how immersive environments can support the engineering design process by merging physical and virtual spaces. We describe the possibilities and constraints of extended reality technologies while highlighting student-driven asset creation and content development in augmented, virtual, and mixed reality. Finally, we share examples and strategies to support educators as they challenge high-ability learners in extended reality environments.
