Abstract
This chapter focuses on introductory psychology as we explore one institution's evolution in assessing general education. We provide a description of the historic role of general education as a prelude for describing collaborative assessment undertaken at James Madison University. We offer details on two strategies, a content-based approach and a competence-based approach, for assessing the contributions of psychology and other social sciences courses to general education. We conclude our discussion with an analysis of the challenges and value of a collaborative approach to assessing introductory psychology courses as components of a general education curriculum.
