Abstract
This work is an examination and identification of colonial coinage recovered by archaeological excavations around the Old Mobile area by the USA and the Pensacola area by the UWF (and earlier archaeologists) using both Historical Archaeology and Numismatic Archaeology. The primary purpose of this analysis and attribution effort is to determine why the French sites around Old Mobile have five times more Spanish coinage present than the Spanish sites around Pensacola. Secondary purposes of this work include filling in a portion of the historical gaps that exist for the colonial Gulf Coast of North America, establishing the obligate mutualism that existed between Old Mobile and Pensacola, and confirming the legal and illegal trade that took place between the French and Spanish on the Gulf Coast, a trading practice that also paralleled Spanish trade practices worldwide. These practices led to the rise of Spain as the first Global Political and Economic World Empire, the rise of the Spanish Dollar as the first world currency, the rise of Mexico City to become the first World City, and the effect of these events on the modern world.
