Abstract
This thesis is a study of mid 16th century olive jars in New Spain, specifically those recovered from the Tristán de Luna settlement and shipwrecks in Pensacola, Florida. The changes in the olive jars’ morphology over the course of the wares use, and the abundance of olive jar on Spanish sites have led to them being used by archaeologists as chronological markers. Despite this there has been little research done on the characteristics of mid-16th century olive jars. This study will strive to remedy this problem by providing a detailed account of the olive jar forms based on the sherds recovered from the Luna settlement sites.
